The Big Fluff Pullover Stripe Edition

When The Lamb & Kid re-released the Italy Palette I knew I had to knit something using these incredible colors together, and thus The Big Fluff Pullover Stripe Edition was born! I combined the colors Fountain (MC) with stripes of Radish (CC1), Dean (CC2), Vintage (CC3), and Olives (CC4) to create this striped version that will take me through the remaining days of summer and into fall. For reference I knit Size 3 which has approximately 12″ of positive ease. For this version I only had 3 skeins of Fountain (which is my MC) and I was determined to make 3 skeins work. (Please note that I did end up using every single bit of yarn from these 3 skeins.) For all the other colors I had 1 skein that I had to split into 2 balls and I pulled yarn from each end of 1 ball and 1 strand from the other ball to get the 3 strands necessary for knitting the pattern. So in total I used 3 skeins of MC and 1 skein of each of the 4 CC stripe colors (so 7 skeins total) for this version which is a Size 3. Below I’m going to share the steps of how to easily modify The Big Fluff Pullover pattern to create your own striped version!

How to stripe your The Big Fluff Pullover:

Each stripe is 6 rows/rounds wide and my first stripe I started 6 rows BEFORE I joined the Back and Front together to knit in the round. So how do you know when to begin your first stripe? Well you will need to look at the pattern and determine when 6 rows before joining in the round is. For Sizes 1 & 2 this will happen before the Shape Armholes section of the pattern. If knitting either of these sizes your first stripe will start 2 rows before you begin Shape Armholes. For all other sizes the stripes will start at some point in the Shape Armholes section. Look at the size you are knitting and depending on how many repeats of Rows 1 & 2 in Shape Armholes you have to do you may work some of these rows in you MC. Determine when your size has 6 rows left of the Shape Armholes section and that is when you will join in 3 strands of your CC1. For Sizes 3-5 at the Shape Armholes section you will join in 3 strands of your CC1 and follow the pattern for this section using CC1 for the entire section. For Size 6 you will work Rows 1 & 2 of Shape Armholes in your MC then change to your CC1 and knit the remaining 6 rows in your CC1 color. For Size 7 you will work Rows 1 & 2 of Shape Armholes twice in your MC, then change to your CC1 and knit the remaining 6 rows in your CC1 color. For Sizes 8-9 you will work Rows 1 & 2 of Shape Armholes 3 times in your MC, then change to your CC1 and knit the remaining 6 rows in your CC1 color. For Size 10 you will work Rows 1 & 2 of Shape Armholes 4 times in your MC, then change to your CC1 and knit the remaining 6 rows in your CC1 color.

From this point on all sizes are the same. You should now have worked 6 rows in your CC1 and be ready to join in the round and join in your next color. Break CC1. Using 3 strands of CC2 you will now work the Body section of the pattern and join to knit in the round. Work 5 more rounds in CC2. Break CC2 and join in 3 strands of CC3. Knit 6 rounds of CC3. Break CC3 and join in 3 strands of CC4. Knit 6 rounds with CC4. Break CC4 and join in 3 strands of your MC. Now you will continue to knit with your MC until your desired length, and then proceed to Hem. In my version I had to make it ever so slightly cropped because I was playing yarn chicken. I only knit 8 rounds with my MC before proceeding to the Hem where I did perform the Optional Decrease Round before knitting the Hem.

The Sleeves are knit exactly to pattern with your MC. For my version shown above I only knit 40 rounds for each sleeve, worked the Decrease Round and then knit the Cuff. And I only had a few yards of yarn left-so a victory in the yarn chicken game!

I hope this encourages you and inspires you to knit your own version and to use the pattern as a starting point to customize it and make it your own!
